WHAT ARE NEUROTOXINS?

WHAT ARE NEUROTOXINS?

Neurotoxins are used for the temporary relief of wrinkles, most typically of the forehead, brow (otherwise known as “11 lines”), and crow’s feet region. There are four FDA approved neurotoxins in the U.S.: Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin. Our practice offers all of them!

TREATMENT GUIDELINES

TREATMENT GUIDELINES:

  • For optimal results, and to minimize the chance of bleeding or bruising at the injection site, avoid all blood-thinning medications and supplements for three days after your appointment. This includes over-the-counter medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, and Aleve.
  • Avoid herbal supplements such as garlic, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, St. John’s Wort and omega-3 capsules.
  • If you have a history of cardiovascular disease, please check with your doctor prior to stopping use of aspirin.
  • Avoid significant movement or massage of the treated area (this includes facials!) for 10 days.
  • Avoid tanning, extensive sun exposure, or heat for 24 hours (no sauna or hot tubs, please).
  • Avoid strenuous exercise or anything that increases your heart rate for 24 hours — take a rest day!
  • Avoid consuming excess amounts of alcohol or salts to avoid excessive swelling the day of your treatment.
  • If this is your first neurotoxin treatment, please follow up 2 weeks post-treatment with your provider for reevaluation and “after” photos. This will help us evaluate proper dosage for your next amazing treatment.

FAQ’S

All these products are very similar in nature and effect, with subtle differences between them. A small percentage of people will be resistant to one or more of these toxins. Therefore, when treated, if the utilized agent is either ineffective or less than fully effective, you may respond better to one of the others. Upon your SkinLocal consultation, your skin expert will work with you to determine which product is best for you.

The neurotoxin itself is a medically manufactured drug originating from bacteria that is associated with botulism. We know, we know — that sounds scary! But it’s totally not; these toxins are extensively proven to be safe and effective, and have been utilized in medicine for decades and have many different uses in addition to smoothing wrinkles, including treating migraine headaches and muscle spasticity.

The toxin itself blocks the transmission of information from a local nerve to the associated muscle, and, therefore, with the muscle unable to fully flex, there are fewer lines.

Yes! There’s a reason Botox and its contemporaries are commonly known as “lunch break treatments.” The quick and minimally invasive treatment will have you in and out in 30 minutes or less, with no downtime after the injections. Note that you may have a bit of bruising and/or some small, mosquito-bite-type bumps at the injection site after your treatment, but both are temporary and should subside quickly.

The typical side effects are headache, bruising, swelling, and redness. These are temporary and will resolve. However, please call the office at 786.701.8106 to notify us if you experience any additional side effects.
